I got into a stint of taking pictures of airplanes. It happened when I was working in El Segundo. I would drive around at lunch trying to find new places to eat and one day I discovered a viewpoint overlooking LAX on the south side. Then I noticed many amateur photographers with tripods trying to take photos of planes taking off. The next time I went there, I brought my camera and started shooting. The thing about shooting airplanes is that it is a lot more challenging than it looks. For starters, the plane is traveling at at least 140 mph when it takes off. When was the last time you tried shooting an object at 140 mph? For comparison, a baseball only travels around 90 mph or less. Additionally, many planes are painted white which throws off the camera setting often overexposing the body of the plane. Still, shooting airplanes became a brief hobby of mine. I upgraded my Canon lenses to some L glass and let the shooting go. Below are the fruits of my endeavors. They don’t look like much, but trust me, this is a lot harder than it looks. Enjoy.
